Public- and private-sector Orangeburg County leaders gather to kick off The One Orangeburg County Initiative

Initiative aims to identify actionable priorities to be completed and make a significant impact on the county by 2021

October 14, 2015 (Orangeburg, S.C.): A group of local leaders recently convened as part of The One Orangeburg County Initiative, a collaborative effort that brings together Orangeburg County’s leaders in the public sector, private sector and education in order to work toward a common goal of making the county an even better place to live, work and play, ultimately attracting new industry and jobs to the area. The Orangeburg County Development Commission has contracted a private economic development and collaboration consulting firm, Sagacious Partners, to guide and facilitate this effort.

“The passion of the residents of Orangeburg County is evident. We’re seeing a renewed sense of pride and desire to make our county unstoppable,” notes Ken Middleton, OCDC Chairman of the Board. “I know that the possibilities are endless. Assembling this great team of leaders is just the beginning of what will become an unprecedented era of collaboration to make our community even stronger.”

Representatives serving The One Orangeburg County Initiative include local business leaders and owners, elected officials, higher education leaders, K-12 education administrators, law enforcement, healthcare representatives, public entity partners and other organizations including the Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Orangeburg Revitalization Association. The group is representative of the entire county.

“Our goal with this Initiative is to move Orangeburg County forward,” states Johnnie Wright, Orangeburg County Council Chairman. “When we work together as a county to tackle some of the shared issues we face, we can make important strides toward progress.”

“Regional Medical Center is pleased to be part of The One Orangeburg County Initiative,” states Thomas Dandridge, President & CEO of Regional Medical Center. “Just as we are here to serve the community in healthcare, we look forward to helping The One Orangeburg County Initiative accomplish its purpose of improving our county one step at a time through collaborative efforts.”

The Initiative will identify a short list of priorities and specific projects that will make a real impact on Orangeburg County by 2021. These priorities will be identified and agreed upon by the members of the One Orangeburg County Initiative and carried out by the appropriate organizations, and will often be the effort of more than one organization. Successful completion of identified projects will attract new jobs, industry and residents to the area.

“Working together with all areas of the county presents a unique opportunity for change,” states City of Orangeburg Mayor Michael Butler. “Bringing together leaders from across sectors and geography will get us closer to a common goal of making the community an even better place for all of us.”

The One Orangeburg County Initiative will meet monthly in the first phase of the effort. Initial steps include identifying target results, obstacles and strategies for change, then prioritizing specific projects that will have a significant impact on the county.

“As a local business owner, it’s important that Orangeburg County sees growth,” notes Jimmy Jones, owner of Jimmy Jones Toyota, who is serving on The One Orangeburg County Initiative in its initial phase. “Now is the time to create a plan for change that will positively impact our residents, visitors, businesses, schools and economy for the long haul.”
